Parents and Students Protest Poor Maintenance of Government Primary School in Pollachi

Parents and students staged a protest at the Sub-Collector's office in Pollachi, demanding quality renovation of a government primary school in Nallur village. The demonstration highlighted concerns over substandard maintenance work.

Coimbatore: Parents and students of a government primary school in Nallur village near Pollachi staged a protest at the Sub-Collector's office on Wednesday, alleging poor quality maintenance work at the school.

The historic Panchayat Union Primary School in Nallur village, which currently has 29 students, has been facing issues with its infrastructure. The school's roof tiles were broken, and the walls lacked stability. Recent heavy rains caused water to leak through the damaged roof, flooding the classrooms.

Following complaints from parents to education department officials, funds were allocated for renovation and maintenance work. However, the protesters claim that instead of purchasing new wood and tiles, old materials are being reused for the repairs.

Concerned about their children's safety, parents, along with students who boycotted classes, gathered at the Pollachi Sub-Collector's office to voice their grievances. They expressed fears about sending their children to school due to the substandard maintenance work, which they believe is contributing to declining student enrollment.

The demonstration was peacefully dispersed after police intervention and negotiations. The protesters subsequently submitted a petition to the Personal Assistant to the Sub-Collector, urging authorities to ensure high-quality renovation of the school and provide a safe environment for education.

In an interview, Divya, a parent from Nallur, emphasized the need for a secure and well-maintained school facility to ensure quality education for their children.
