Vinayagar Idol Production in Full Swing in Pollachi, but Sales Remain Sluggish

In Pollachi, Vinayagar idol production is ramping up for the upcoming Vinayagar Chaturthi on September 7. However, manufacturers express concern over slow sales due to various restrictions imposed by authorities.

Coimbatore: As the Vinayagar Chaturthi festival approaches on September 7, the production of Vinayagar idols is in full swing in Unjavelampatty near Pollachi. Despite the bustling activity in workshops, idol makers are expressing concern over sluggish sales this year due to various restrictions imposed by authorities.

Traditionally, Hindu organizations and the general public celebrate Vinayagar Chaturthi by installing Vinayagar idols in homes and public places for worship before immersing them in water bodies. The idols being crafted range from three to ten feet in height and showcase a variety of impressive designs and vibrant colors.

Manufacturers stated that they are adhering to guidelines set by the Tamil Nadu government and the Pollution Control Board. The idols are being made using eco-friendly materials such as tuber flour and paper pulp, along with water-soluble colors to minimize environmental impact. However, they lament that sales have been disappointingly slow this year, contrary to the usual pattern where idols produced over ten months are sold out within a month before the festival.

The idol makers attribute the lackluster sales to strict regulations imposed by the Tamil Nadu government, police department, and Pollution Control Board. They claim that these restrictions have made the public hesitant to purchase Vinayagar idols this year. Some customers who had previously placed orders are now canceling them, adding to the manufacturers' distress.

The producers appeal for a relaxation of restrictions, arguing that only then will people show interest in buying Vinayagar idols this year. As the festival draws near, the idol makers remain hopeful for a turnaround in sales while continuing their production efforts in Pollachi.
