Flood Warning Issued for Riverside Villages as Thirumoorthy Dam Fills Rapidly Near Udumalpet

Heavy rains in catchment areas cause rapid rise in Thirumoorthy Dam water levels. Public Works Department issues flood warning to over 10 riverside villages in Tirupur district.

Tirupur: The Thirumoorthy Dam in Udumalaipet, Tirupur district, is rapidly filling up due to heavy rains in its catchment areas, prompting authorities to issue a flood warning to nearby riverside villages.

The water level in the dam is rising quickly due to heavy rainfall in various parts of its main catchment area, Panchalinga Falls, including Kurumalai, Kuzhipatti, and Jallimuthan Parai. As continuous heavy rains persist in the catchment areas, there is a possibility of surplus water being released from the dam at any time.

In response to this situation, the Public Works Department has issued a flood warning to more than 10 riverside villages along the Palar River. Residents of villages including Vallagundapuram, Valaiyapalayam, Jilebi Nayakkanpalayam, Arthanaripalayam, and Devanurpudur have been advised to move to safer locations.

Currently, the water level in the Thirumoorthy Dam stands at 57.53 feet against its full capacity of 60 feet. It is noteworthy that this flood warning has been issued after a gap of three years, highlighting the severity of the current situation.

Authorities are closely monitoring the water levels and rainfall patterns to ensure the safety of the residents in the potentially affected areas. They have urged the public to stay alert and follow the instructions given by local officials to prevent any untoward incidents.
