State Under-19 Badminton Championship Underway in Coimbatore

The Tamil Nadu State Under-19 Badminton Championship, organized by the Coimbatore Badminton Association, began yesterday at RAK's Pallikoodam in Peelamedu. Over 400 players from 30+ districts are participating in this 5-day event.


Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu State Under-19 Badminton Championship, organized by the Coimbatore Badminton Association, commenced yesterday at RAK's Academy in Peelamedu. The event, sanctioned by the Tamil Nadu Badminton Association, will run for five days.



A press conference regarding the championship was held today at the RAK's Pallikoodam premises. V. Arunachalam, executive committee member of the Badminton Association of India and general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Badminton Association, along with Swetha Krishnamurthy, founder of Rocks School, addressed the media.

Arunachalam stated that over 400 athletes from more than 30 districts across Tamil Nadu are participating in the championship. The competition features five categories: men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. Winners of this championship will represent Tamil Nadu in national-level competitions.

The event is sponsored by Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVANI), a government organization under the Ministry of Defence. The total prize money is Rs. 3 lakhs, which will be distributed among 64 players, from winners to quarter-finalists.

The finals are scheduled for Saturday, June 17. Anbumani Ramadoss, president of the Tamil Nadu Badminton Association and vice-president of the Badminton Association of India, is expected to attend.

When reporters pointed out the lack of public facilities for badminton under the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) in Coimbatore district, Swetha Krishnamurthy responded: "Representatives from various sports associations in Coimbatore, including badminton and tennis, met with the Sports Minister and senior officials two months ago. We submitted information and proposals for necessary facilities in the district."

She added, "We requested a minimum of 15 badminton courts with facilities. They have allocated land near the upcoming cricket stadium in Coimbatore and mentioned they would select another location as well."

It was also reported that some renowned corporate companies have come forward to support Coimbatore's needs for public badminton facilities through their Corporate Social Responsibility funds.
