Students and Volunteers Clean Up Plastic Waste in Madukkarai Forest Range

Volunteers from TREE and NSS students from VLB Janakiammal College cleaned up plastic waste in Madukkarai forest range near Coimbatore on Monday, as part of World Elephant Day observance.

Coimbatore: Volunteers from the Trust for Environment and Ecosystem (TREE) and National Service Scheme (NSS) students from the VLB Janakiammal College of Arts and Science joined forces on Monday to remove plastic waste littered by rail passengers in the Madukkarai forest range near Coimbatore. The cleaning drive was organized in collaboration with the Coimbatore Forest Division as part of the World Elephant Day observance.

The mass cleaning campaign aimed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting elephant habitats and maintaining ecological balance. Over 50 NSS volunteers participated in the drive, focusing on preserving one of the region's most vital ecosystems.

Sathish Ramamoorthy, founder of TREE, emphasized the risks posed by plastic waste to elephant health in the Madukkarai forest area. He stated, "Throwing of plastic waste by train passengers in the Madukkarai forest area poses risks to the health of elephants. Active participation of young students in this cleaning campaign sends a powerful message about the role of youth in conservation efforts."

B. Satheesh kumar, Principal of VLB College, commended the students' involvement, noting that their commitment to protecting the forests not only enhances their learning experience but also contributes positively to the community and the environment.

The organizers highlighted that this initiative serves as a prime example of how youth engagement can make a significant impact on environmental conservation efforts, particularly in protecting critical habitats for endangered species like elephants.
