Coimbatore Corporation Launches Drive to Remove Wall Posters from Public Places

Coimbatore Corporation and city police initiate a drive to remove wall posters from public places, focusing on major roads. Violators face fines between ₹5,000 and ₹25,000 to deter future offenses.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Corporation, in collaboration with the city police, launched a drive on Tuesday to remove wall posters from public places, including bridges and medians.

The initiative will initially focus on major roads such as Avinashi Road, Mettupalayam Road, Trichy Road, and Sathyamangalam Road. An official source stated that small streets and pocket roads would be covered in later phases of the drive.

Political parties and private entities have been responsible for defacing compound walls of public offices and parking areas with wall posters. Notable areas affected include the stretch from the main corporation office to Lanka Corner on Big Bazar Street, and near the city railway station.

An official from the corporation's town planning department revealed that they have identified several areas from where wall posters need to be removed. "Our current focus is on the highways and main roads. The drive will be extended to other areas later," the official said.

Corporation officials have been instructed to penalize those responsible for putting up wall posters in public places. "They will be fined anywhere between ₹5,000 and ₹25,000. We hope the fine will act as a deterrent for them in future," the official added.

An activist commented on the situation, stating that while authorities could easily trace the people defacing public offices and places with movie, political party, and other posters, they were often reluctant to take action. The activist emphasized, "This menace could be curbed only if corporation officials impose hefty fines on those putting up wall posters in public places."
