Obesity Awareness Marathon in Coimbatore Highlights Increasing Health Concerns

VGM Gastro Hospital organized an obesity awareness marathon in Coimbatore, drawing attention to the rising prevalence of obesity among both children and adults. Doctors reported that one in three Indians now face obesity-related issues.

Coimbatore: The VGM Gastro Hospital organized its 4th annual obesity awareness marathon at the V.O.C. Grounds in Coimbatore. The event was inaugurated by Dr. V.G. Mohan Prasad, founder of the hospital, and former MLA N. Karthik, who flagged off the marathon.

The event saw a participation of 3,200 individuals. The marathon was divided into three categories: 10 kilometers, 5 kilometers, and 3 kilometers. Men, women, and even wheelchair users took part in the race.

At the marathon venue, senior gastroenterologist Dr. Mohan Prasad and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Suman met with journalists. They stated, "One in three Indians is affected by obesity. Over the past decade, this has increased from 11% to 30%. Urban residents are more affected than those in rural areas."

The doctors added, "Modern lifestyle factors such as fast food consumption, irregular eating habits, and lack of exercise are causing people to face various health issues. Problems like fatty liver disease, heart attacks, and high blood pressure have increased."

The medical professionals also warned about the rising obesity rates among children. "Previously, we would see one child coming for treatment, but now we see five. Lack of physical activity, absence of outdoor play, and excessive mobile phone usage are contributing factors," they explained.

The doctors emphasized that obesity can lead to osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. They stressed the importance of exercise and a balanced diet for a healthy lifestyle.

Senior gastroenterologists Dr. V.G. Mohan Prasad, Dr. Gokul Krupa Shankar, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Suman, and gastroenterologists Dr. Madhura Suman and Dr. Vamsi were among the many medical professionals who participated in this marathon event.
