Coimbatore: The GKNM Hospital's Obstetrics and Gynecology Department inaugurated a specialized Menopause Clinic on Thursday (Aug. 10) at the GKNM Integrated Outpatient Center.

Dr. Ragupathy Velusamy, CEO of GKNM Hospital, presided over the event. Dr. Sumathi, President of the Madurai Menopause Society, attended as the chief guest.

The event highlighted the challenges women face during menopause and discussed protective measures.

It also emphasized the importance of seeking medical advice during this critical phase of life.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Sumathi, President of the Madurai Menopause Society, stated, "Menopause is a natural occurrence. It marks the transition of women from a reproductive state to a non-reproductive one. During this transition, women experience various symptoms, including irregular menstruation, due to the decrease in estrogen levels."

She further added, "According to the World Health Organization's 2018 report, the life expectancy of Indian women is projected to be 75 years by 2025. Indian women are significantly affected by menopausal symptoms. This underscores the need for well-planned and properly structured menopause clinics. Such clinics will pave the way for the elderly to lead healthy and active lives."

Following the speeches, the Menopause Clinic was officially inaugurated in the presence of Dr. Ragupathy Velusamy, CEO of GKNM Hospital, Dr. Sumathi, President of the Madurai Menopause Society, and Dr. Amudha, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at GKNM Hospital.

Dr. Amudha, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at GKNM Hospital, explained, "Women going through menopause are affected both physically and mentally. They also face numerous health issues. We have established this Menopause Clinic with a preventive approach. Women often suffer from symptoms like insomnia, mental stress, and anxiety during menopause. These symptoms can be alleviated through proper medical consultation."

She further elaborated, "With the increasing prevalence of cancers, regular check-ups at menopause clinics can help prevent breast cancer, uterine cancer, and other malignancies. GKNM Hospital, which has been continuously serving the community, has launched this Menopause Clinic intending to keep women happy and healthy during their menopausal years."
