The Indian Cotton Federation and Indian Cotton Association Ltd will jointly host the 6th Bi-Annual All India Cotton Conference in Coimbatore on August 9-10, bringing together stakeholders from the textile industry to discuss challenges and trends in the cotton sector.
Coimbatore: The Indian Cotton Federation (ICF) and Indian Cotton Association Ltd (ICAL) are set to jointly host the 6th Bi-Annual All India Cotton Conference in Coimbatore on August 9th and 10th.
The event aims to bring together stakeholders from the textile industry, particularly those dealing with cotton, including ginners, traders, brokers, and mill owners from across India.
Thulasidaran, President of ICF, chaired a press conference on Wednesday to announce the event. He stated, "All issues related to cotton will be discussed at the conference. Experts from various cotton-related sectors, including reputed industry leaders, office bearers from various associations, and research organizations, will speak about the national and global scenario of cotton, changing trends, and market expectations such as emphasis on cotton traceability, environmental aspects, and sustainability."
The conference, to be held at The Residency Towers, is expected to attract nearly 400 delegates from across India and countries like Egypt and Malaysia. Participants will discuss and compile conclusions to solicit necessary government policy initiatives at both state and central levels.
Addressing the current cotton scenario in India, Thulasidaran highlighted that high cotton prices have significantly affected exports in recent times. He noted that 30% of textile sector exports have been impacted due to various reasons, including low cotton yield and the holding of cotton by some stakeholders in anticipation of higher Minimum Support Price (MSP) rates.
Thulasidaran also pointed out challenges faced by Indian exporters compared to competitors like Vietnam and Bangladesh. "Rival exporters such as Vietnam and Bangladesh send their products to Europe like us, but they incur lesser taxes compared to what we pay. The labour charge in Bangladesh is also cheaper," he explained. He suggested that reducing taxes on raw material imports could make Indian exporters more competitive in the textile sector.
According to a press release, Roop Rashi, Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, will be the Chief Guest at the conference inauguration. Selvendaran IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Madhya Pradesh, will be the Guest of Honor.
The event will also honor industry leaders with awards. K.G. Baalakrishnan, Chairman of KG Group, and S. Manivannan, CMD of LS Mills Ltd., will receive the Life Time Achievement Award. The Business Leader Award will be presented to Atul P Asher, Partner at RS Asher & Co; Ashok D Daga, Partner at Damji Velji & Co; and Gopal Bhuradia.
