Thirumoorthy Dam Water Release Plan Discussed for Second Zone Irrigation

A meeting of the Thirumoorthy Reservoir Project Committee was held on August 6, 2024, to discuss water release from Thirumoorthy Dam for second zone irrigation in Parambikulam Aliyar Project areas.

Coimbatore: A crucial meeting of the Thirumoorthy Reservoir Project Committee was held on August 6, 2024, at the office of the Superintending Engineer, PAP, in Pollachi. The meeting focused on the release of water from Thirumoorthy Dam for second zone irrigation in the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) areas.

The committee meeting was chaired by Dr. Paramasivam, the Project Committee Chairman. S. Murugesan, B.E., Superintending Engineer, WRD (PWD), was also present at the meeting.

Committee members P. Arun, C. Nithyanandam, K. Nallathambi, Ko. Kurusamy, P. Easwaran, M. Deivasigamani, M. Easwara Moorthy, and R. Balasubramanian attended the meeting. Additionally, executive engineers from the Water Resources Department, Aliyar Basin Division, Pollachi, and Thirumoorthy Division, Udumalpet, participated in the discussions.

The committee considered the current water levels in the Parambikulam Aliyar Project reservoir system and the expected inflow due to the Southwest monsoon. Noting that all reservoirs except Thirumoorthy Dam have reached their full capacity, the committee decided on the following water release plan:

1. Water release for the second zone irrigation will commence from August 19, 2024.

2. The release will be spread over 120 days, with four rounds of water supply at appropriate intervals.

3. If the PAP reservoir system receives higher inflow and maintains good storage during the irrigation period, an additional round of water supply may be provided.

4. A similar plan of 4+1 rounds of water supply was also approved for the upcoming third zone irrigation.

This decision aims to ensure efficient water management and equitable distribution for agricultural needs in the region, taking into account the current water levels and expected monsoon patterns.
