Special Team Deployed to Monitor Elephants in Maruthamalai Area, Coimbatore

A special team has been formed by the Forest Department to monitor elephant movements at night in the Maruthamalai area of Coimbatore, responding to increased elephant activity in the region.

Coimbatore: The Forest Department has formed a special team to monitor elephant movements in the areas surrounding Maruthamalai, which falls under the Coimbatore forest circle. This decision comes in response to the increased elephant activity observed in the region.

The newly established special team comprises six members, including forest rangers and forest guards. They have been tasked with conducting night-time surveillance in areas where elephant movement is frequent.

The team's primary objective is to keep a close watch on the elephants' movements and behavior during the night hours. This initiative aims to mitigate potential human-elephant conflicts and ensure the safety of both the local residents and the elephants.

Forest officials stated that the increased monitoring is necessary due to the recent surge in elephant sightings in the Maruthamalai area. The team will work in shifts to maintain continuous surveillance and will report any significant elephant activity or potential risks to the higher authorities.

This proactive measure by the Forest Department is expected to help in early detection of elephant herds moving towards human settlements, allowing for timely interventions to prevent any untoward incidents. The department has also urged local residents to cooperate with the monitoring team and report any elephant sightings in their vicinity.
