Seven arrested for smuggling ganja from Odisha to Coimbatore

Coimbatore police arrested seven individuals on August 3 for smuggling 11 kg of ganja from Odisha. The suspects were caught near Coimbatore Railway Station during a routine patrol.


Coimbatore: The Coimbatore police have arrested seven individuals for smuggling ganja from Odisha to Coimbatore. The arrests were made on August 3 near the Coimbatore Railway Station during a routine patrol.

A team of policemen led by Sub-Inspector Javahar from the Coimbatore Prohibition Enforcement Wing were on patrol duty near the railway station when they noticed a group of suspicious individuals standing in the Lanka Corner area. Upon inspection, the police discovered 11 kg of ganja packaged for sale in their possession.

The suspects were immediately taken to the police station for questioning. During the interrogation, it was revealed that they had smuggled the ganja from Odisha to Coimbatore for distribution and sale. The arrested individuals were identified as Sanjay Sahu (34), Tirendar Berkra (24), Ranjita Nayak (23), Prasanth Thakur (36), Sagar Muhari (57), Narendra Tripathi (30), and Palte Jibila (20), all hailing from Odisha.

The police confiscated the ganja and arrested all seven suspects. They were subsequently remanded to judicial custody. In addition to the narcotics, the police also seized six mobile phones from the accused.

This operation is part of the ongoing efforts by the Coimbatore police to control the circulation of narcotic substances, including ganja and tobacco products, in the district. The authorities have been implementing various measures to curb the drug menace and maintain law and order in the region.
