Landslide Disrupts Udumalpet-Munnar Road, Affects Commuters

Heavy rains in Kerala trigger landslide on Udumalpet-Munnar road, cutting off inter-state traffic. Authorities urge caution as flooding risks increase in the forest areas.

Tirupur: The Udumalpet-Munnar road, which passes through the dense forest area of Anamalai Tiger Reserve, has been temporarily closed due to a landslide, causing significant disruption to inter-state traffic between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The closure occurred in the stretch between Marayur and Munnar following heavy rains in Kerala's southwestern region. The intense downpour over the past few days has led to the formation of new streams and flooding in various parts of the forest area.

Last night's heavy rainfall caused rocks to tumble down, resulting in a landslide on the Udumalpet-Munnar road.

Consequently, traffic between the two states has been completely cut off. Vehicles from Udumalpet were only able to proceed as far as Marayur.

With the monsoon intensifying in Kerala, there is an increasing risk of floods. Authorities have advised drivers using the forest route to exercise extreme caution. The public has also called for officials to take measures to ensure the availability of essential items, including life-saving medicines, in the affected areas to prevent any shortages.

The Udumalpet-Munnar road is a crucial link for bus services, goods transportation, and private vehicles between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The sudden disruption has left many commuters stranded and searching for alternative routes.

Local authorities are working to clear the debris and restore the road connection. However, the continuous rain is hampering these efforts. Travelers are advised to check for updates and plan their journeys accordingly until the situation improves.
