Ministers Discuss Detailed Plans for International Cricket Stadium in Coimbatore

Ministers Udhayanidhi Stalin and TRB Rajaa, along with senior officials, held further discussions about establishing an international cricket stadium in Coimbatore as the site for the stadium had been selected in Ondipudur.

In a significant move towards enhancing sports infrastructure in Tamil Nadu, a high-level meeting was held at the Chennai Secretariat to discuss the establishment of an international cricket stadium in Coimbatore. The meeting, which took place on July 4, was attended by key government officials and ministers, including Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and Industries Minister TRB Rajaa.

The discussion, chaired by Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena and Additional Chief Secretary of Sports Development Department Atulya Misra, focused on identifying suitable locations for the proposed stadium in Coimbatore. Three potential sites had been shortlisted:

1. Ondipudur Open Air Prison

2. The area behind Bharathiar University

3. Central Prison Ground

Last month, Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin visited a 30-acre plot of government poromboke land in Ondipudur, Coimbatore, which is currently used by prisoners for agriculture. This site, located near the Salem-Kochi National Highway, has been deemed the most suitable for the stadium construction due to its strategic location and accessibility.

Following the minister's visit, instructions were given to the district administration to initiate the process of transferring this land to the Sports Development Department. This move indicates the government's commitment to fast-tracking the project.

The meeting also addressed broader issues related to sports development in Tamil Nadu. One of the key points discussed was the creation of job opportunities in government and public sector enterprises for athletes from Tamil Nadu who have won medals in Olympic and international sports competitions. This initiative aims to encourage and support the state's talented athletes.

The decision to establish an international cricket stadium in Coimbatore is expected to have far-reaching implications for the city and the region. It could potentially:

1. Boost the local economy by attracting national and international cricket events

2. Provide world-class training facilities for aspiring cricketers from the region

3. Enhance Coimbatore's profile as a sports destination

4. Create new job opportunities in sports management and related fields

While the exact timeline for the project has not been announced, the high-level nature of the meeting suggests that the government is keen on expediting the process. The involvement of multiple departments, including Sports, Industries, and general administration, indicates a collaborative approach to ensure the project's success.

As the plans for the international cricket stadium in Coimbatore progress, it is expected to generate significant interest among sports enthusiasts and the general public alike. The project aligns with the state government's broader vision of promoting sports and creating world-class infrastructure across Tamil Nadu.

Further updates on the project, including detailed plans, budget allocations, and construction timelines, are anticipated in the coming months as the government moves forward with this ambitious initiative.
