Farmers Plant 1.94 Lakh Trees in a Single Day to Honor Nammalvar under Cauvery Calling by Isha

In remembrance of the natural farming crusader Nammalvar, farmers in Tamil Nadu planted 1.94 lakh trees in one day, a record set under the Cauvery Calling campaign.

Coimbatore: On December 30th, celebrated as the remembrance day of the renowned natural farming scientist Nammalvar, farmers in Tamil Nadu achieved a remarkable feat. Under the guidance of the ‘Cauvery Calling’ movement, they planted a staggering 1.94 lakh tree saplings in a single day. This initiative took place across 736 acres of farmland, owned by 88 farmers.

Nammalvar, a venerated figure in natural farming, tree cultivation, and soil fertility, dedicated his life to these causes. His thoughts and actions have inspired countless youths to switch to natural farming practices. Nammalvar was also deeply involved in environmental initiatives undertaken by the Isha Foundation, including the ‘Cauvery Calling’ campaign, which continues to follow his path.

On his remembrance day, nature enthusiasts honor him in various ways, and planting timber trees is one such tribute to his service. Planting timber trees serves as a solution to various environmental issues and provides a livelihood opportunity for farmers. Timber trees such as Teak, Malai Vembu, Karumaruthu, Vengai, Yellow Kadambu, Sandalwood, Red Sandalwood, Kumil, and Mahogany are suitable for cultivation and offer good market value. Additionally, pepper cultivation on these trees can provide a continuous source of income.

Quality timber saplings are produced in Isha nurseries located in Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai, and they are made available to farmers at just ₹3 per sapling through over 50 Isha nurseries across Tamil Nadu. Given the recent favorable rainfall, farmers are encouraged to purchase and plant these saplings.

For advice on tree-based agriculture, farmers can contact the Cauvery Calling campaign at 80009 80009. This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable farming and environmental conservation in the region.
