SHRC directs SP to compensate law student with Rs,1 lakh for harassment meted out to him at a police station

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), which probed the issue of harassment of a law student at a police station in Coimbatore, ordered that the affected student should be given a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh. Accordingly, the Superintendent of Police handed over a cheque of Rs. 1 lakh to the affected law college student.


The Nilgiris: Ramesh Kumar, who is a resident of Thirumalayampalayam Vinayagar Koil Street in Coimbatore sought an explanation from Thirumalayampalayam town panchayat officials on the proposed solid waste management centre near his house.

The incident happened on November 12, 2019 and following which he had also received information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act about the project.

Angered at this, Madukkarai police Inspector Thuyamani Vellaisamy, Vadavalli and Thondamuthur Circle inspector Manivannan and K G Chavadi sub-inspector Anandakumar allegedly took Ramesh Kumar to the police station and harassed him before warning him not to indulge in such activities.

Peeved at this, Ramesh Kumar lodged a complaint with the District collector, and SP. He had also lodged a complaint with the State Human Rights Commission in this regard.

Hearing the case, the State Human Rights Commission has directed the Tamil Nadu government to pay a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to victim Ramesh kumar.

The court also directed the government to collect Rs 50,000 from the sub-inspector and Rs 25,000 from the two inspectors. Following this, a cheque for Rs 1 lakh was handed over to Ramesh Kumar by Superintendent of police.
