After addressing the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the TN Governor R N Ravi left the House even before the national anthem was sung which led to a lot of buzz and debate in the Tamil Nadu political circles.
There was mayhem at the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly even as the session began at 10 am on Monday.
As per normal Assembly custom, the Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi arrived for the session amidst members of the DMK and its allies raising slogans like 'Tamil Nadu Vaazhga.' The TN Governor R N Ravi then began his speech by saying, "My dear brothers and sisters, Happy New Year and Pongal!"
In protest against the Governor's introductory lines, the legislators of the DMK and its allied parties like the Congress, CPI, CPM, VCK, MDMK, Tamil Nadu Vazhvurimai Katchi and Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi approached the well of the House, raised slogans and then staged a walk out.
The TN Governor continued his address by speaking on various issues saying, "During the second and third wave of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu, the State Government handled things well. NEET takes away the medical dream of rural students and the Breakfast Scheme introduced in Government Schools is an example set for other States."
It is alleged that though there were words like Dravidian model, social justice, Periyar, Anna, Ambedkar, etc in his written speech, the TN Governor avoided reading those words as well as making the State language as the official language. The omitted words were reportedly present when the Assembly Speaker Appavu translated the Governor's speech into Tamil.
Soon after the Governor's address, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin addressed the Assembly stating that he was deeply saddened that the Governor had ignored the report prepared by the Tamil Nadu Government and did not read it. The Chief Minister M K Stalin also proposed a resolution to expunge from the minutes of the House for speaking in defiance of the printing press.
As the Chief Minister continued to speak, even before the national anthem was played to conclude the proceedings of the Assembly, Governor R N Ravi, accompanied by his security guards suddenly walked out of the House.
Following the commotion that followed, the Speaker announced that the resolution moved by the Chief Minister had been passed and only those printed would be included in the minutes of the House. Following the Governor's exit from the Assembly, AIADMK and BJP legislators also walked out of the House.
Later speaking to reporters, the Opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami said that the Governor had alleged that the speech written was an empty speech. He also said that it was against the tradition of the House for the Chief Minister to speak when the Governor was sitting in the Assembly.
Vanathi Srinivasan, the BJP MLA from Coimbatore South constituency, demanded why the Governor was called to the Assembly by the DMK and then insulted. "Is this the tradition of democracy?" she further questioned.
Minister Thangam Thennarasu who explained on behalf of the ruling party regarding the Governor's speech issue, clarified that the Governor had read out the speech against the tradition and rules followed thus far in the Assembly and the Governor had already given his assent to the speech given to him.
"Moreover, by the Governor exiting the Assembly even before the national anthem was played, it is an insult to the national anthem," he alleged.
