Dist. Collector initiates immediate action to hand over house allotment order to widow with differently-abled son in Coimbatore

Accepting the petition of a widow near Chettipalayam in Coimbatore, the District Collector G S Sameeran personally handed over the order to the widow Sheela, thereby allotting the house under the Slum Clearance Board within 24 hours.

Coimbatore: Sheela (44), the wife of Gopal, a resident of Periyar Memorial Samathuvapuram near Chettipalayam in Coimbatore district had lost her husband and lived with her 14-year-old differently-abled son Ramasamy.

Maniammal (63), a destitute woman had been staying in Sheela's house since she was homeless. Even though Sheela was not related to Maniammal, Sheela continued to humanely stand with her and support her. Sheela has been unable to even go to work since her differently-abled boy needed daily care at close quarters.

In their situation, the Tamil Nadu Government's Disability Welfare Assistance was their biggest source of livelihood. Maniyammal had also been washing dishes at a hotel in Coimbatore till October last year with a salary of Rs.6,500 to support Sheela and her son. Maniyammal had to recently quit her job due to old age and is presently taking care of four goats.

Since Sheela and her son would become homeless if anything should happen to Maniyammal, they were taken to the weekly Public Grievance Day Camp and were made to submit a memorandum to the Coimbatore District Collector, G S Sameeran.

District Collector G S Sameeran immediately reviewed the matter and within 24 hours of Sheela filing the petition, he ordered the immediate allotment of a house in the Malumichampatti project area under the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board.

The District Collector also visited the beneficiary Sheela's place of residence on Tuesday and handed over the order.

G S Sameeran also praised Maniammal for helping Sheela and her son and donated Rs. 36,000 to be paid by the Government of Tamil Nadu to the Urban Habitat Development Board from the District Collector's Discretionary Fund.
