Doctor saves life of naive farmer from Erode who fell prey to superstition

The farmer from Erode approached a temple priest to offer sacrifice to a snake for absolving his sins on the advice of an astrologer. The priest asked him to stretch out his tongue to a viper in the temple. The farmer who obeyed, fainted when his tongue was chopped off by the priest as soon as the snake bit his tongue.

Erode: A 54-year-old farmer from Erode who dreamt of a snake sought advice from an astrologer regarding the dream. The astrologer reportedly pointed to a temple and stated that the seer there was breeding snakes. He advised the farmers to offer a sacrifice to the snakes for his sins to be absolved.

Believing this, the naive farmer went to the temple priest and told him what the astrologer had advised. The priest claimed that he had more than 20 snakes and then took out a deadly poisonous viper. The priest reportedly stretched out his tongue in front of the snake and asked the farmer to do the same to make amends.

The farmer then reportedly went in front of the snake and stretched out his tongue, but the deadly poisonous snake bit the farmer's tongue. Thereafter, the temple priest immediately took out a knife and chopped off the farmer's tongue.

The farmer fainted on the spot due to severe bleeding. Following this, the farmer was taken to Maniyan Medical Centre in Erode. A team comprising Dr. Senthil Kumaran treated him immediately and saved the farmer.

Professor Sakthivel Vaiyapuri of Redding University in London and Dr. Senthil Kumaran have been raising awareness among the public on snakes and snake bites by doing intensive research.
