FOCIA announces protest on Nov. 25 in Coimbatore demanding rollback of hike in power tariff

Coimbatore: The Federation of Coimbatore Industrial Associations (FOCIA) has announced that it will go on a day-long hunger strike and lockout in Coimbatore on November 25 to press for the complete rollback of the power tariff hike initiated by the Tamil Nadu Government.

Coimbatore: A press conference was organised by the Federation Of Coimbatore Industrial Associations (FOCIA) at the SIMA auditorium on Race Course Road in Coimbatore.

Federation Coordinators James, Sivashanmuga Kumar, Surulivel and others spoke at the press briefing. "While the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have already been facing severe economic crises for the last two years due to the pandemic Covid-19, the hike in power tariffs is also having a severe impact on industries. In particular, the peak hour charges have been fixed to such an extent that Small and Micro Enterprises come to a standstill, which puts the entire SME industry at the risk of having to shut down," opined the FOCIA Coordinators.

"Therefore, the Government of Tamil Nadu should fully roll back the hike in peak hour charges used by the Micro and Small Enterprises entrepreneurs. The Government needs to take steps to continue the earlier fixed charge of Rs. 35 upto 112 kw to protect SMEs," they added.

On behalf of 18 industry organizations of the FOCIA Consortium, the Coordinators urged the Government to withdraw completely the hike in power tarifff. They also stated that FOCIA will observe a one-day hunger strike and a one-day lockout of industrial establishments in Coimbatore on November 25.
