Elephants continue to take their way on Nilgiris Geddai Ghat route

A herd of elephants that have been camping on the Geddai hill route has been frequently blocking vehicles, with the latest incident being a car that was aggressively chased down by an elephant on the same route, on Thursday evening.

Nilgiris: Locals from Manjoor and surrounding areas of the Nilgiris district travel to Coimbatore every day through the Geddai hill route which comprises dense forests. Movement of wild elephants on this road has become frequent lately.

For the past one week, a herd of elephants camping on the Geddai route has been blocking vehicles. On Thursday evening, elephants reportedly chased down a car aggressively which was headed towards Coimbatore. The driver of the car quickly drove the car backwards for a short distance, after which the elephant retreated.

Men on a two-wheeler who were also passing by the route left the bike on the road in panic and ran away. Only after the elephants returned to the forest cover after a long period of time, the motorists resumed their journey on the Geddai route.

Motorists and the public have now demanded that the Forest Department should monitor the herd of wild elephants which have been frequenting the Geddai hill route.
