Leopard kills cow near Nallurvayal in Coimbatore; Locals demand Forest Dept. to trap leopard immediately

It is alleged that the leopard has been on the prowl in the Nallurvayal area of Thondamuthur in Coimbatore recently and killed cattle. Locals have demanded that the Forest Department should immediately take up the task of capturing the leopard from entering residential areas to prevent any more casualties.

Coimbatore: A leopard is reportedly on the prowl in Nallurvayal area near Thondamuthur under the Madukkarai forest range for the past few days. Farmers in the area claim that the leopard has been attacking and killing cattle, including goats and cows.

In the latest instance of leopard attack, cows belonging to Shanmugasundaram, a native of Perumalkovilpatti in Nallurvayal were let out for grazing near the garden on Tuesday. When one of the cows did not return home, Shanmugasundaram went looking for the cow in the same area that it had been let out for grazing and to his shock found the cow dead with injuries all over its body.

Following this, Shanmugasundaram informed the Madukkarai Forest Department who reached the spot, examined the footprints near the dead cow and identified them as that of the leopard. The Forest Department also handed over the dead cow for autopsy to the veterinary doctors. Anti-poaching guards are constantly monitoring the area for movement of the leopard.

In the last three months, more than five cattle have been attacked and killed by the leopard. The farmers have demanded that the Forest Department should take immediate action to prevent the leopard from entering their residential areas.
