Junior engineer sentenced to 7 years in jail for accepting bribe to issue name change certificate in Ooty

A special anti-corruption Court has sentenced 60-year old Jayalakshmi, a junior engineer of Kilkundha town panchayat in Ooty, to seven years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs, 3,000 for accepting a bribe of Rs.1,800 to issue a name change certificate.


The Nilgiris: Sivakumar of Pallimanai village near Manjoor in Nilgiris district had approached Jayalakshmi who was working as a junior engineer in Kilkundha town panchayat, seeking a name change certificate for the purpose of workers' quarters.

It is learnt that Jayalakshmi had demanded a bribe of Rs.1,800 from Sivakumar for issuing a name change certificate. Following this, Sivakumar informed the Anti-Corruption Bureau who handed over chemical-coated notes to Sivakumar to hand over to Jayalakshmi.

Jayalakshmi was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau officials and was arrested. The trial in the case had been underway in the special Anti-Corruption Court in Ooty.

Justice Sreedharan who heard the case sentenced Jayalakshmi to three years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs. 1,000 on her for demanding a bribe. She was also sentenced to four years in jail and a fine of Rs. 2,000 was slapped for accepting a bribe, totalling seven years in jail and a fine of Rs. 3,000.

Following this, 60-year-old Jayalakshmi was taken to Coimbatore Central Jail.
