3.5 years on and running pillar to post, farm labourer still struggles to get his subsidy on house built using Amma Veedu Scheme

Agricultural labourers have been going to government offices more than 50 times to get the subsidy for the house they built under the Amma Veedu scheme at Pooluvapatti in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore: Chinnasamy, a native of Lakshminarayanaswamy Koil Street, Kiliyagoundanpalayam, Puluvapatti, Coimbatore, is working in the forest.

His son Saravanakumar (40) also works as an agricultural labourer in a farm in the same area.

In 2017, they applied using the housing scheme for all (Amma Veedu) and started the construction of the house.

Rs 50,000 each has been disbursed in three instalments after many delays while the work was in progress.

Speaking about this, “we have not been able to receive the final subsidy of Rs 60,000 which is pending for more than 3.5 years now as the house has been completed.

So far, I have visited the town panchayat office more than 50 times and the collector's office about 10 times.

It has taken me up to Rs 6 lakh to build a house and for this, I have taken loans at various places to pay off the loan by working as a labourer. Out of the Rs 2.10 lakh grant promised to be given under the Amma's house project scheme, the final instalment is pending.

Moreover, every time new officers come to ask for this subsidy amount, there is a lot of confusion. I request and demand that steps be taken to disburse the subsidy at the earliest as the authorities have not been doing this for the last 3.5 years. Similarly, around seven people in the area are in a similar situation.”
