Coimbatore Vellalore garbage dump gets 2 months time to submit report - National Green Tribunal

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has given two months time to the Coimbatore District Collector and Corporation Commissioner to submit a detailed report on the condition of the Vellalore garbage dump.

Coimbatore: The garbage collected from 100 wards of Coimbatore Corporation is being collected and graded at the Vellalore garbage depot in Coimbatore.

Due to this, lakhs of tonnes of garbage has now been collected in one place. V Easwaran of Marumalarchi Makkal Mandram filed a petition in the Chennai Green Tribunal seeking immediate removal of the garbage dump, saying it was causing environmental and health damage to the people of the area.

The trial in the case was completed and the final verdict was delivered in 2019. It was informed that the garbage in the Vellalore dumping ground should be completely removed within a year.

But even after two years, the garbage has not yet been removed. Easwaran again filed a contempt of court case in the National Green Tribunal in Delhi.

The court directed the Coimbatore District Collector and the Corporation Commissioner to submit a detailed report on the Vellalore dumping ground within two months.

An explanation has also been sought on the death of a woman who died a few months ago after she was trapped in a heap of garbage in a garbage dump at Vellalore dumping ground.

Meanwhile, a few days ago, the state monitoring team of the Green Tribunal inspected the Vellalore garbage dump. At that time, it gave 15 months time to remove the garbage.

It also said that the report of the work being carried out once in three months should be submitted.
