The Nilgiris: Late former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa had passed away on December 5, 2016. In 2017, a murder and robbery took place at the Kodanad estate owned by her which created a wave of suspicion across Tamil Nadu. 10 people, including Sayan and Valaiyaru Manoj were arrested in connection to this case but are currently out on bail.

The case has been heard at the District and Sessions Court of Ooty for the last five years. Last year, a fresh petition was filed on behalf of the police in the case which sought further investigation into the Kodanad heist-cum-murder case. Five special squads were formed under the leadership of Western Zone IG Sudhakar.

Since August 7, 2016, about 316 people have been questioned by the special police teams. The interrogation continued with the 10 accused, including Kanagarajan's brother Dhanapal, cousin Ramesh and Kodanad Manager Natraj, Sasikala, Jaya TV CEO Vivek, former MLA Aarukutty and others who were allegedly involved in a vehicle accident.

On May 30, the Tamil Nadu DGP had ordered the transfer of the case to the CB-CID. The documents pertaining to the questioning thus far in the Kodanad heist-cum-murder case have been placed in sealed covers and submitted to the Court by the special police teams on Monday.
