260 shops in Coimbatore fined for using sub-standard plastic items

In a meeting of the District Level Steering Committee on behalf of the District Food Safety Department, the office bearers of hotel owners association, bakery association office bearers, consumer organisations and others participated in the meeting.


Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Food Safety Department held a district-level steering committee meeting. Collector Sameeran presided over the meeting. District Food Safety Officer Thamilselvan presided over the function.

The meeting was attended by the office bearers of hotel owners association, bakery association office bearers, consumer organisations and others.

Speaking at the meeting, the Collector said that “Coimbatore district has been ranked in the ranking list of the Food Safety and Standards Authority and has earned the praise of the Chief Minister.

As many as 36,769 licenses were registered in Coimbatore in April. It has now increased to 39,824. As many as 354 establishments in Coimbatore have received quality certificates for safe delivery of food.

35 temples under the control of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department have been given PHOG certification for annadhanam and prasadam halls. So far, 5,048 food samples have been taken in Coimbatore district.

Of the 1,120 civil cases registered so far, a sum of Rs 92,11,500 has been imposed as fine in 923 cases by the District Adjudicating Officer. Further, in 233 of the 565 criminal cases, a fine of Rs 59,75,500 was imposed on those involved in the case along with imprisonment.

As many as 260 traders have been fined Rs 5.20 lakh for using sub-standard plastic products.

So far, 879 traders have been fined Rs 45.50 lakh for selling banned tobacco products.”
