Elephant herd camps at Bharathiar University campus in Coimbatore; Students run helter-skelter

A herd of elephants entered the premises of Bharathiar University in Coimbatore on Marudhamalai Road on Thursday evening. Acting immediately on a tip-off, the Forest Department reached the spot and chased the elephants away.

Coimbatore: In a shocking incident, a group of students of Bharathiar University in Coimbatore ran helter-skelter in the campus after encountering a herd of wild elephants on the campus.

More than 15 wild elephants have been camping in the Marudhamalai forest areas along the Western Ghats for the past few days. These wild elephants have been entering residential areas from time-to-time and damaging shops and houses. Last week, some wild elephants roaming in the area entered the settlements and damaged houses and shops there.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, more than five wild elephants camped as a herd inside the campus of Bharathiar University. Shocked by the sight of the elephants, college authorities immediately informed the Forest Department. Forest officials and social activists who reached the spot on information began to chase the wild elephants away. Students ran helter-skelter on noticing the sudden movement of the herd of wild elephants in their University campus.

The wild elephants ran amok, while the Forest Department officials patiently chased the herd of elephants back into the forest cover. More than 20 forest officials camped near Bharathiar University to prevent wild elephants from again entering the University campus.
