The miscreant who reportedly committed the crime as an act of revenge due to personal enmity with the 19-year-old woman, was arrested and produced in Court under the IPC 507, 509 and 67, and Information Technology Sections.

Coimbatore: Even as crimes committed against women and children have been on the rise in Coimbatore, unidentified abusers target young women to torment them physically and emotionally.

A 19-year-old young woman from Coimbatore was tortured by an unidentified attacker who allegedly took one of her normal photos, morphed it into an obscene image and sent it back to her on WhatsApp. This caused the family great distress, and the 19-year-old lodged a complaint with the City Cyber Crime Police along with the person's phone number to take appropriate action against the offender.

Under the direction of the Police Commissioner Balakrishnan, a special police unit led by the Cyber Crime Police Inspector Arun was formed to track down the offender. The police traced the address linked to the mobile number, and the investigation revealed that the person living at that address had no connection to the crime. The police team then tracked the alternative number provided when purchasing the SIM, to a teenager. During the interrogation of the teenager, the police discovered that one of the teenager's friends was involved in the crime.

On fruther investigation, the miscreant was identified as Manoj who confessed to having done the obscene morphing due to a personal enmity with the young woman and wanted to take revenge on her. Manoj, who planned to morph her photo and send it to her, planned to buy a SIM at someone else's address proof to avoid getting caught by the police. Since he worked in a mobile phone store, Manoj used the documents of a customer who had bought a SIM and since he had to provide an alternate number, Manoj used his friend’s number.

Manoj also linked his bank account to the number and tried to change the SIM purchased, to his name. He was caught by the police after they inspected this and tracked him down.

Manoj reportedly showed admirable good behavior in public even after committing such a crime, and reportedly felt shocked and threatened by his sudden arrest. Manoj was arrested and produced in court under the IPC 507, 509 and 67, and Information Technology Sections. He is presently lodged in Coimbatore Central Jail.

The special Cyber Crime Police team led by Inspector Arun received tremendous appreciation from top officials in the department for prompt action in arresting the culprit.
