Forest Dept. officials in Valparai chase herds of wild elephants back into forest cover

Wild elephants have been leaving the forest cover in search of food and in the process damaging houses, noon meal centres, temples and grocery shops in Valparai's residential areas.


Coimbatore: The movement of wild elephants in the estate areas in and around Valparai in Coimbatore district is on the rise. Wild elephants have been leaving the forest cover in search of food and in the process damaging houses, noon meal centres, temples and grocery shops in residential areas.

The Forest Department has been kept busy chasing herds of elephants back into the forest. On Monday night, four wild elephants entered the residential area of Oosimalai Top Estate area and broke open the window of the Mariamman temple in the area and damaged the objects inside the temple. Thereafter, the wild elephants damaged the windows of the houses of Krishnan and Marimuthu.



On receiving the information, Forest Department officials chased the four wild elephants back into the forest area. Locals in the area are in a state of panic after seeing elephants camping in the area for the last two days. Similarly, CCTV cameras installed in the area have captured the movement of a single wild elephant entering the premises of a hospital in Sholayar Dam area. The public has demanded that the Forest Department drive away the elephants into the dense forest area to prevent the movement of wild elephants into human settlements.
