76 rare species of saplings decorate TNAU's newly established Freedom Garden

As part of Independence Day celebrations at TNAU today, 76 rare tree species of plants were planted to establish ‘Suthanthira Vanam’ at the Botanical Garden. The VC of TNAU inaugurated the initiative by planting a ‘Palmyrah palm’ sapling.



Coimbatore: On the eve of 76th Independence Day celebrated at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) today, 76 rare tree species were planted to establish ‘Suthanthira Vanam’ (Freedom Garden) at the Botanical Garden, TNAU, Coimbatore.

Dr.V.Geethalakshmi, Vice Chancellor of TNAU inaugurated the ‘Suthanthira Vanam’ (Freedom Garden) by planting the ‘Palmyrah palm’, the State tree of Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, a seedling progeny of Jamun (Syzygium cumini) planted by our 'Father of the Nation' Mahatma Gandhi, was planted at the garden by renowned Environmentalist and Eco Warrior M. Yoganathan.

Deans, Directors, Staff and students of TNAU planted 76 different native tree species which attracts birds and honey bees viz., Saraca asoka, Ficus bengalensis var.Krishnae, Cassia fistula, Putranjiva roxburghii, Suregada angustifolia and etc., in the ‘Suthanthira Vanam’ highlighting the 76th year of Independence.

The Vice Chancellor also inaugurated the ‘Rosarium’ comprising of 20 different Rose varieties. The newly established ‘Suthanthira Vanam’ and ‘Rosarium’ will be two new attractive components of the TNAU, Botanical Garden, Coimbatore which will enthuse nature lovers, botanist, scientists, students and public besides their recreational value.



Dr. P. Irene Vethamoni, Dean (Hort.), and Dr.K.Rajamani, Professor and Head, Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, HC&RI, TNAU, Coimbatore organized the tree planting event.
