In Coimbatore, the World Elephant Day Awareness rally was organized on behalf of the Forest department. District Forest officer Ashok Kumar flagged off the rally.

Hundreds of school and college students wearing elephant masks took part with zeal.

The rally which commenced from North Kovai from near the District Forest office is located passed through RS Puram, Lawley road.

School and College students representing SNS college, Rathinam college and Sindhi Vidyalaya participated in the rally.

Later speaking to media persons, District Forest Officer Ashok Kumar said, "The elephants keep the forest ecosystem healthy and sustainable. The recent spate of death of wild elephants in Coimbatore forest division is a cause for concern, and we are investigating on the increasing deaths.

The unnatural death of elephants due to train hits is being taken seriously and the forest department has coordinated with the Railways department to minimize the death. The forest watchers are monitoring the movement of elephants near railway tracks, and high power mast lights are installed near railway tracks in the forest division to increase visibility, so that the loco pilots, who could spot the elephants might slow down."

"The rally is being organised to drive home the importance of elephants which play a decisive role in the health of the forest ecosystem", Anamalai Forest Field Director, Ramasubramanyam said.
