Dist. Collector recommends to National Green Tribunal to impose Rs. 373.74 crores fine for illegally acquired soil by owners of brick kilns in Coimbatore

Since 1.10 crore cubic meters of soil had been taken in all the four Panchayats, the Collector recommended a fine of Rs.373.74 crore to be imposed on the land owners and brick kiln owners.

Coimbatore District Collector G S Sameeran has recommended to the National Green Tribunal to impose a fine of Rs 373.74 crores on brick kilns and land owners who have illegally acquired soil for brick production in Coimbatore district.

Last year, the National Green Tribunal banned 177 brick kilns operating in violation of regulations in the villages of Chinna Thadagam, Somayampalayam, Pannimadai and Nanjundapuram in Coimbatore district. Following this, all brick kilns were closed down.

Thereafter, Coimbatore District Collector G S Sameeran recommended to the National Green Tribunal to fine the owners of brick kilns by calculating the amount of soil taken and dumped for brick production. Since 1.10 crore cubic meters of soil had been taken in all the four Panchayats, the Collector recommended a fine of Rs.373.74 crore to be imposed on the land owners and brick kiln owners.

"Mineral Resources Department, Pollution Control Board and Revenue Department conducted an investigation on the soil taken and dumped for brick production in 177 brick kilns operating in Coimbatore district. It has been recommended to the Green Tribunal to assess the quality of the soil excavated for making bricks and to specify the assessment and levy penalty accordingly. The Green Tribunal will finalize the imposition of penalty," added the Collector, G S Sameeran.
