Textile worth 50 Lakh stored in Erode godown gutted

A major fire broke out at a private textile godown in Erode district on Tuesday. While no casualty was reported, primary investigation has pegged the damage to be around 50 lakh. The reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained by police, and fire and rescue personnel.

Nearly five fire and rescue trucks were deployed to douse the flames that started around 3.30am. The operations lasted until 8.30am. Fire department officials said it was difficult to bring the fire under control, as textile materials, cloths, cotton bags and machineries were stored at the godown. "The fire was reported to have broken out at around 3.30am and it engulfed the warehouse, reducing everything to ashes," said a fire and rescue services personnel, on condition of anonymity.

It is learnt that some workers were working in the cloth manufacturing unit, present on the same premises, when the incident occurred. "We had stocked huge volumes of textile material in the godown as they had to be processed. All of it was gutted," said the unit owner.

Meanwhile, the Veerappanchatram police has initiated a probe into the incident. "We suspect a short circuit in the godown's electrical wiring to have triggered the fire. A case has been registered and further investigations are under way," police said.
