Rare Flying Snake Rescued in City

A rare snake species called the Sri Lankan Flying Snake was spotted on the outskirts of the city on Sunday morning. The snake was rescued from a house in Kalampalayam near Perur, and was released into the forest near Navakarai here.

"The snake was spotted in a residence in Kalampalayam near a water theme park in Perur. I have not spotted this species of snake in Coimbatore in my 17-year experience of catching snakes," said R Ranjith, the person who rescued the snake.

"The snake is usually spotted in the Western Ghats. The snake may have come from one of the trucks transporting woods, from hill stations, to saw mills in the area," he said.

The snake's common name is Sri Lankan Flying Snake, and its scientific name is Chrysopelea taprobanica. "The snake is brown in colour, and has lines of black on the body. The head is bright yellow-blue, and it has large eyes," said Ranjith. The snake which can grow up to 4 -4.5ft in length, is capable of gliding from one tree to another.
