Cheated by consultancy, students approach District Collector

Cheated by a private educational consultancy, which sends students abroad for higher education, the affected approached District Collector Archana Patnaik here on Monday.

Nearly 29 students from Tamil Nadu were sent to Russia to pursue degrees in medicine by the Alpha Educational Consultancy run by the Adam Trust.

One of the students alleged that they were initially told that they would be admitted with a State Medical University in Russia, however they were admitted to the St. Petersburg Sociomedical Institute in St. Petersburg in Russia in October 2015.

“We initially paid around Rs. 6 lakh each, but the consultancy further demanded Rs. 1 lakh more from us after the first semester,” one of the students alleged.

She further claimed that the students were not provided with enough facilities in the institute. Another boy also claimed that students were harassed by consultancy personnel in Russia.

Managing to return from Russia at the end of February, around eight students approached the District Collectorate on Monday demanding action against the Trust and reimbursement of the money they had paid.

They also said that when they approached the consultancy to refund of money, the Trust members had said that they would not return the money but would instead go to jail.

It may be recalled that the Adam Trust was recently in news for the same reason when a student who gave a complaint against the Trust was attacked by its advocate inside the R.S. Puram police station in January. He was reportedly admitted for a medical course in Philippines.
