‘Coronary artery disease on the rise in Coimbatore’

Coronary artery disease is alarmingly on the rise in Coimbatore, chairman of Kovai Medical Centre Hospital (KMCH) Nalla G. Palaniswami said. According to a World Health Organisation report, cardiovascular diseases have emerged as the leading cause of mortality worldwide, he added.

He was speaking at the inaugural of the upgraded KMCH City Center, with a state-of-the-art cardiac care centre at Ramnagar on Sunday. The centre was inaugurated by Siravai Adheenam Kumaragurupara Adigalar and Perur Adheenam Maruthachala Adigalar.

Dr. Palanisawmi claimed that globally 17.3 million deaths are attributed to cardiovascular diseases.

Indians around the world have the highest rate of heart diseases.




Death rate

Deaths due to cardiovascular diseases in India are in the range of 1.7 million to two million every year.

“The disease also affects the younger generation due to changes in lifestyle,” he said. The centre that has 24 hours cardiac care emergency also has other departments.
