Accused in attempt to murder case escapes from Coimbatore court complex

A man accused of attempting to murder his wife managed to flee from the district court complex in Coimbatore on Tuesday, moments after a judge remanded him in judicial custody.

The 41-year accused appeared in the court seeking bail after a warrant was served on him. But when principal sub judge s Malarmannan rejected his bail plea and ordered him to be remanded, he sneaked away from the court hall and then fled the complex.

There was no police around to take him into custody when the order was served. The court staff who were involved in paper work for sending him to judicial custody realized the man had sneaked away from the court sometime later. "We have registered a complaint and have launched a search. He will be arrested in a day or two,'' said a police officer.

According to police, the accused C Sakthidass, a wall painter, attacked his wife S Kathija with a knife leaving her with 17 cut injuries at his residence in CGV Nagar in Selvapuram on December 17, 2014. Kathija had miraculously survived the attack and lodged a police complaint. Police said that Kathija had lodged three more complaints as well against Sakthidass in the past as they had frequent quarrels since their marriage in 2009.

In fact, he stabbed her for refusing to withdraw those cases. She had raised an alarm and neighbours came to her rescue. She was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and had to get 24 stitches. Though Sakthidass fled the scene, police arrested him later.

But he was out on bail and was to appear in the court on Monday (March 14). When he failed to appear, a warrant was issued against him.

Hoping that he would get bail, he appeared before the court on Tuesday. But the magistrate remanded him in judicial custody till March 28. When the court officials were engaged in the paper work, he escaped from the court.

Based on a complaint from the court staff, the race course police station have registered a case and are on the lookout for Sakthi Dass.
