Registration procedures simplified for central excise

Jewellers can register for central excise online, said V. Rajendran, Commissioner for Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax, Coimbatore. He told reporters here on Tuesday that there was voluntary registration, and voluntary disclosure. The Central Excise officers have been told not to visit the premises of jewellers. Jewellers with turnover of less than Rs. 12 crore during the previous year will be eligible for exemption up to Rs. 6 crore turnover for assessment year.

Such jewellers will be eligible for exemption up to Rs. 50 lakh in March, 2016. Jewellers have the option of centralised registration if they have branches in several cities.

Coimbatore is said to be the third largest jewellery manufacturing centre in the country. Gold imports here so far this fiscal stood at 11.78 tonnes, and total customs revenue was Rs. 271 crore.

Only the principal manufacturer should register for the excise duty payment, Mr. Rajendran said.
