Credit card crime on the rise; police warn public

Having received around 62 credit card crime complaints in the first three months of 2016, the cyber Crime division of the city police have warned the public to be careful about fraudulent phone calls that largely result in such crimes.

In a release, the city police said that they continue to receive complaints regarding unauthorized debiting of money from their bank accounts, without their knowledge. They further said that most often, before such withdrawals, the victims had received calls from unknown persons asking bank details under the pretext of renewing the credit or debit card.

“The persons ask for bank accounts and PIN numbers, which the legitimate bank personnel never ask over the phone,” the release said.

The release also stated that people should never disclose such details to anyone over phone and immediately inform the police when they receive such calls.

They have also advised the public to block the account and ATM card if the latter is found missing, and also ping the city police.

While 22 cases having been registered in the month of January, and 26 in February, the month of March has already seen 14 cases so far, according to the release.
