Coimbatore schoolchildren take up a green cause, clear garbage

COIMBATORE: In an attempt to express responsibility towards preserving the environment, the students of Yellow Train School in Mudalipalayam removed the garbage dumped in front of the areas' municipal school.

The students spent their weekend clearing the garbage, removing the inconvenience caused to the students and teachers while entering the campus.

The activity was conducted by the students of grade 5.

"The students, a batch of 12, were brainstorming on ideas for their project. It started from a tree house, and then Iniya came up with the idea of clearing the garbage in front of the Mudalipalayam Municipal School," founder of the school Sandhya Vikram said. "Our children had seen the students of the municipal school wade through the garbage and this moved them to clear the garbage," she said.

The students thought of different ways to remove the garbage. "First they approached the panchayat officials and found where the garbage came from. They also approached the municipal school's headmistress, but, they could not get any help. At last they decided to take it in their own hands," Sandhya said.

The students, with the help of parents and volunteers from the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore, arranged for an earthmover.

While the children took up the responsibility to clear the garbage, they also decided that they need to educate the villagers about preserving the environment. So, the children went around the village announcing their activity in the traditional style. "They used drums and informed the villagers about the activity, reaching to more than 150 houses," said Sandhya.

The children told the villagers about the need to keep their surroundings clean, and taught them some practices to ensure cleanliness. "The students then got the villagers to paint the walls of the municipal school and lay a garden in the campus," said Sandhya.
