Outfits picket Trichy Road over honour killing

Tension prevailed on the Trichy Road, opposite the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), as members of various outfits picketed the road and demonstrated a road roko today.

Even as post mortem was being conducted on the mortal remains of V. Shankar (21), his wife, C. Kousalya (19) who had sustained injuries was undergoing treatment at the CMCH.

Shankar was hacked to death by a three-member gang with sickles near the Udumalpet bus stand while he had gone shopping with his wife.

While Chinnasamy, the father of the girl had reportedly surrendered with the Nilakottai police station in Dindigul district, the whereabouts of the persons involved in the attack were not known.

The video and the photographs of the attack were largely circulated on social media.

Meanwhile, members of various outfits, including the All India Women's Association, Viduthalai Siruthaigal Katchi and Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam staged a road roko demanding the arrest of all those involved in the murder. They had initially staged a demonstration inside the CMCH premises and later picketed the road.

They later moved inside the CMCH after District Superintendent of Police R.V. Ramya Bharathi and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order Nisha Parthiban, tried to pacify the crowd.

K. Ramakrishnan from the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam said that as many as 81 honour killings have taken place in the State in the last three years. “A new law should be formed to curb such incidents in the future,” he said.

Leaders of the Makkal Nala Koottani have also condemned the attack stating that in the last 700 murders, morethan 70 per cent have been carried out in the name of honour killing.

Meanwhile, parents and relatives of Shankar continued to refuse to accept the body in protest.
