Woman held for trying to murder her 3 stepchildren

Three children, including two girls, had a narrow escape from a murder attempt by their stepmother, who tried to slit their throat using a razor blade at Velliangadu in Tirupur city on Wednesday night, after the trio alerted the neighbours, who rushed to their help.

The children, all students of a corporation school in the nearby area, are undergoing treatment at Tirupur government hospital, with the boy under observation in the intensive care unit.

The Veerapandi police have arrested the woman in connection with the incident.

The children have been identified as Nathiya, 7, Trisha, 5 and Jeganath, 4. Their father Subramani, 36, of Andipatti in Theni district, married Abhirami, 19, six months back after his first wife committed suicide two years back following a family dispute, said police on the case.

Abhirami, however, didn't like the children and wanted to get rid of them. When Subramani, employed with a textile unit in Tirupur city, went to work on Wednesday, Abhirami took the children to the bathroom on the pretext of washing their faces and slit their throat with a razor blade. Unable to bear the pain, the children raised an alarm. Hearing them cry, neighbours rushed to the house and took them to the Tirupur government hospital.

Meanwhile, Abirami also got admitted to the hospital, claiming that someone attempted to kill her, along with the children. According to her, an unidentified man entered the house and slit the children's throat. When she tried to save the children, the assailant also assaulted her and managed to escape.

Upon receiving the news, the Veerapandi police reached the hospital and talked to the children. The two girls, Nathiya and Trisha, told police that it was their stepmother who had attempted to murder them by slitting their throat using a razor blade.

Police have registered a case against Abhirami under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested her on Thursday. Abhirami was later produced before a judicial magistrate court, which remanded her at Coimbatore central prison.
