Decomposed gaur carcass buried inside well in Nilgiris

A highly decomposed carcass of a gaur was found in a well located on a private farm land in Kotagiri town in the Nilgiris on Wednesday. As the carcass could not be removed from the 60-ft well, forest officials have covered the well after obtaining the consent from the land owner.

The carcass was first spotted by the land owner, Micheal, who searched his tea garden near Club Road in Ramchand area in Kotagiri after a strong stench emanated from there.

"The carcass was found in a highly decomposed state. The approach to the well was such that any crane or earth-mover could not be taken there to remove the carcass," said Murugan, forest guard of Kotagiri range. "The land owner suggested that the well could be covered if the carcass could not be removed," Murugan further said.

Following this, forest officials pumped out the water in the well, which was later covered with soil mixed with at least 100kg of salt.

Representatives of local body were present at the spot as witnesses, according to the official. "We could not perform a post-mortem in this case. However, a local veterinarian visited the spot," Murugan added. In the meantime, a case of bear attack was reported in the Kotagiri range of forests. The victim has been identified as B Bheeman, a tribal from Anikadu village near Kotagiri, said Murugan. "He sustained a minor injury on his left hand. He has taken medicine from a local hospital in Kotagiri town," added the official.
