Awareness programme on snakes for CRPF officers

Save Our Snakes, an NGO involved in rescuing snakes, conducted an awareness programme on snakes for senior officers of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), on the Central Training College premises here on Monday.

Twenty-seven senior officers from various States, who were here for a disaster management course, took part in the programme.

Session

A four-member team of Save Our Snakes led by its president K. Rathish handled the session.

With a power point presentation, they dwelt in detail on the types of common snakes, venomous, mild and non-venomous snakes, snake bites and first aid, the art of handling snakes and benefits of snakes to humans.

Demonstration

They also conducted a live demonstration with four snakes including cobras and rat snake that were rescued at houses in Singanallur, Vadavalli and Podanur and from a public tap at Appanaickenpalayam near Thudiyalur on Sunday night and during the early hours of Monday.

Deputy Inspector General of Police and principal of CRPF Central Training College in Coimbatore Ajay Bharatan and second in command E. Ramesh were present during the programme.

The rescued snakes were released into the dense forest area at Palamalai.
