Election Commission to announce dates today

The Election Commission is likely to announce dates for Assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry today.

The Election Commission is expected to hold a press conference in this regard today afternoon.

As per the reports, with 234 and 294 Assembly seats, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal respectively are likely to have a three-phase polling whereas, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry can witness a two-phase polling.

For the BJP-lead NDA government, which is in the minority in the Upper house of the Parliament, the forthcoming Assembly polls in the five states are crucial as they would want to gain an upper hand in Rajya Sabha after registering victory in these states.

The Assembly polls are also critical for PM Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah, whose credibility had suffered a major blow after two major debacles in Delhi and Bihar Assembly polls.
