People Welfare Front stages protest in Coimbatore

Members of the People Welfare Front (PWF) in Coimbatore staged a protest on Tuesday stating that the Puliyakulam area in the city was completely ignored by the civic body and it lacked even the basic amenities.

Apart from roads, drains and street lights, they said even the corporation marriage halls and community halls were not available for them to use as they were often rented out to people from other areas. They visited the ward office in Puliakulam and gave a petition of their demands to the officials.

Among the various demands was the renovation of the public toilet in Puliakulam. "Even if they set up a smaller toilet, it should be modern amenities that can be easily maintained," said T Nagaraj, east zone member, CPM.

He said the drains from Ganeshpuram till Masal Layout have not been de-silted at all. "When the monsoons arrive, this area will be flooded," said Nagaraj.

The cadres also demanded that a library and maternity hospital be set up in the area. "Several accidents take place in the area and so we request the officials to set up a signal near the Vinayakar temple," said another cadre.

Since there were frequent reports of law and order issue at Ammankulam housing unit, the cadres requested them to set up a police booth in the area.

"The corporation middle school in Damu Nagar should be upgraded to a higher secondary school and the TASMAC shops located between the school and the temple should be removed immediately," read out V Ramamoorthy, CPM councillor of ward 42.

The cadres led a rally from the Vinayagar temple in Puliakulam and went up to the ward office to hand over their petition. "We hope the civic body takes notice and takes action immediately," said Nagaraj
