Residents seek probe into man's death

Residents of Periyapothu village near Pollachi petitioned the district SP R V Ramya Bharati on Thursday, seeking a probe into the death of a 56-year-old man, who was taken to Anaimalai police station for interrogation regarding a family dispute. Suspecting foul play, they requested the police to exhume his body and conduct a post-mortem, to ascertain cause of death.

P Ramakrishnan, 27, a daily wage labourer lodged a petition with the SP stating that he had married his neighbour Sathyadevi five years ago. They used to quarrel often forcing Sathyadevi to file a harassment complaint against him and his father Palanisamay, mother Valliyammal and his younger brother Boopathi on February 12.

"My father was asked to appear before Anaimalai police station at 11am on February 15. When he returned home after the interrogation, his face was swollen. He told me that he was beaten severely by police," said Ramakrishnan. At 10pm the same night, Palanisamy vomited and was rushed to Pollachi government hospital. Later, he was shifted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital. He died on February 16.
