Priest reinstated after serving prison term in the US

A Catholic priest with a criminal record has been re-inducted into the diocese of Ooty after serving a one-year prison term in the US.

The priest who was under suspension for a case of sexual misconduct filed against him in the US, received a pardon from the Vatican after serving his term.

Now he has returned to India, only to be deputed to the same position in the church where he began his ecclesiastical career, although he has not yet been assigned any ministerial duties.

The Catholic priest, Jeya paul Joseph Palanivel, hailing from the Ooty diocese in the Nilgiris, had been charged with sexually assaulting two minor girls in Minnesota, US, in 2005.
