Women of Iduhatti protest to terminate Tasmac

The initiative taken by the TN Government to close 500 liquor shops around the state has received appreciations and criticisms, as well. Public and few political parties are of the view that shops near educational institutions, temples and places of public gathering should be shut down with immediate effect. While the political parties are of the view that the government has intentionally curtailed the operations of only low income generating shops and that the government should act prudently on this issue.

People, especially women of Iduhatti, a village with over 700 families, are utterly disappointed to learn that their village tasmac is not in the list announced by the government. ‘Women, school children and public are getting adversely affected because of the boosehounds and that they spend most part of their wages at the tasmac. A few deaths of men addicted to alcohol has caused tears and fears amongst the family members of the drunkards, striking the harmony of the family and village’, say women of Iduhatti.

Today at around 7:30a.m. the women orchestrated a protest on the Ooty-Kotagiri road strongly adjuring to shut down the tasmac at their village with immediate effect. There was a major stand by in traffic for nearly 2 hours which plugged in the attention of the relevant officers. The protestors dispersed after the authorities assuring them immediate action on closure.
